The RUGF location the veteran mentions squares, as i recall, with the 
installation
manual information. I don't remember a speaker being cited there also.

The Iwo radio was certainly a 300 set. ( BC-1000 )  That's the radio seen in 
the
flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi.
As for radio silence, it was probably to keep the already crowded "combat 
band"
( low HF ) usable. That book i was reading, "Navy Retread", describes 
numerous
communications channels going on at once. Interesting listening up and down
the dial! BTW, he called it the "combat frequency band", that's not my term.
Possibly also, the RU receiver just wouldn't be able to cope with the 
channel
spacing and occupancy.
