A few years back there was some discussion on BoatAnchors about the Navy
carrier based system that transmitted different letters for every so many
degrees of azmuith. I can't recall the whole enchilada, perhaps Bill
Donzelli can. I worked on surface based TACAN in the early '60s, using an
ARN-21 aircraft set as a mobile monitor. GRN-9, SRN-6, URN-3/3A if I
remember right. Coarse AZ modulation was 15 degrees, fine modulation at 135
degrees and the DME (range) was based on 12us pulse pairs. The IF was 63mc.
