As a follow-on to Meirs' conversion information, within American tubes, there is usually a miniature equivalent for late (6S-Shielded) octals.  The 6SK7 near equivalent miniature is the 6BD6.  For the 6SG7, the 6BA6 seems to have exactly the same specs.  The 6SA7 can be replaced by the slightly hotter 6BE6, while the later/better 6SB7Y is petty much the same as a 6BA7.  And so on ad naseum.

Of course, as you go up in frequency above 20 MHz or so, the octals start to lose performance while the miniatures hold their specs better due to shorter leads and lower package parasitics.
