I bought the film on DVD as soon as it was released late last year.

Look CLOSELY at the radio shack of the "Cristobal Trader"... besides
an early Hallicrafters S-38, you'll also notice on the wall a QSL card 
from W1AW!!!

Lenny, the navigator, will also give you a quick demonstration of the
proper use of the APN-9 LORAN receiver.


BTW, the Hispanic guy is Gonzales Gonzales, one of John Wayne's buddies
and "stock" players; he's in a number of Duke's films. In the commentary
on the DVD he rather amazed me; at the time of THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY
he was new to the United States, and wasn't able to read English yet. At
the end of every day's shooting he took the script home with him his
wife would read the script to him so he could memorize his lines for the 
next day's shooting.
