The John Wayne movie "The High and the Mighty", was on AMC last night so I got a chance to look for some boatanchors.
One hero in the movie is the Hispanic Ham Radio operator on board the ship that
picked up the aircraft transmissions and relayed them to San Francisco. There was a large transmitter in the left side of the shack and what looked like a Hallicrafters receiver. Can anyone identify these sets or other equipment in this room?
I vaguely remember seeing this film as a kid in the 1960's on Million Dollar Movie, a TV show in New York where they repeated the same move during the week. I recall the that Navigator did not know what he was doing; he used a Loran A set and the movie being a long boring soap opera interspersed with some exciting and tense scenes. We'll, it turns out the Navigator made one mistake, he used statue instead of nautical miles, and the set was used to determine altitude from ground,
not a Loran Set. (Anyone know what this set is?). I was right about it being a soap opera, but I did enjoy the vintage equipment and the "politically incorrect" sexual innuendos, cigarettes and handguns.
73,
Mike
