One of my aircraft, a 1940 Stinson 10A used by the Civil Air Patrol
in anti-Submarine coastal patrol, had the following notice in a
logbook entry dated March 12, 1941:
"Installed one Keifer [sic] Transmitter-7 lbs- located in baggage
compartment +2.2'
Installed one Keiffer [sic] Transmitter power supply-5 lbs-located in
baggage compartment +2.2'
Installled one Antenna Reel-3 lbs-located 2 inches forward of the leading edge"
The equipment has long since been removed.l
Google search does not find a match for either Kiefer or Kieffer,
Kiefer or Kieffer when associated with radio, transmitter, Sender,
Rundfunk, Gerat etc.
The reference is clearly to a manufacturer of airborne transmitter
equipment active in the late '30's or early 1940's.
This aircraft did not begin flying coastal patrol until mid 1942,
after moving from Amarillo, Texas to Corpus Christi about that time.
This seems to preclude an installation prompted by a need to use
equipment compatible with a Nazi submarine's frequencies, etc. But
I'm not sure, since the name is clearly of German origin.
Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.
