I have no doubt the SCR-593 was used exactly as officially described: air warning receiver.
The land equivalent of the Navy ship's RBS, the one in the splash-proof cover.
I have somewhere a photo showing an AA installation, either a 40mm gun or more likely a
90, with a 593 receiver sitting on the sandbag wall. I also recall some years back talking
with a fellow who had trained with the 593 receivers in the National Guard, this in 1941, i
think.
I think Marty's right that the RS-6, the Army accounted for most of the numbers.
Even tho Operation Armageddon was a big deal, there just weren't that many SAC bombers
to account for the RS-6 numbers. But did the Army then just set them aside, and go
with the GRC-9 instead?
Marty, Robert, did i remember to mail you a copy of that "Air Classics" article on "Operation
Armageddon" ? -Hue Miller
