Hi Glenn,

I'm not disputing this...but the AM-3007/URC is part of several Navy sets,
such as the AN/WRC-1, AN/URC-35, and a AN/BRC-something or AN/BRT-something
(I can't remember anymore) that we had on the subs. It would seem a strange
limitation for such a widely used unit. Perhaps the key phrase is
"continuous duty transmit."

Maybe some list members who were surface navy can report their experience.

When the TCS was replace with the WRC-1 one of the major (operational)
problems we had was the RMs (Radiomen), being used to the low power TCS,
used too much power. Instead of 12-20 Watts AM on 2716 they used the full
boat 100 Watts of the WRC-1 so swamped the along-side tug. They did,
however, copy 5ers with San Francisco/Hunters Point fron San Diego.

The WRC-1 technical whoo-haww in the newer DDGs ( Adams Class especially)
was the lack of a good ground for the antenna tuner. The after deck house
had a rubber insulator between itself and the hull. Capacitor/condenser????
The set had untunable dead spots. I went from 32nd street in San Diego to a
hardware store and bought copper roof flashing for a gnd strap from the 01
to the hull.....tuning worked. Writing it up as a field change / 'benny sug'
almost had me Court Martialed. Nobody, including General Dynamics who built
the radio wanted to deal with the problem. What saved me, ET2 Ski, was
rotating back to Vietnam and , I guess, it was forgotten.

Oh...drilling holes??? I did that with the KY-8 in Vietnam hot weather.
