Yes, I wondered how those 3 tiny holes do the job with the RS-38A. The
element only has 4 tiny holes in it. Lots less than a standard telephone
element.

The RS-38-(*) was the standard Navy handheld carbon microphone through
the
40's and early 50's, as the T-17-(*) was with the Signal Corps. A variant
is
also used with MAB and another variant with the TBY. There were several
different
Navy Type Numbers, and at least two NAF numbers. The variants differed in
cordage attached and PTT switch contact configuration. But the microphone
body
and carbon element were the same. The common one with PL-68, RS-38A, is
51004-A
or -C. The one on the MAB is 51042. The unit with the TBY, RS-38-B or
51004-B,
also had a larger number of larger diameter holes in the front cap.
The CAU-51006 (which is not an RS-38 variant) was used with early TBX
sets
(and probably TBO) but I've never had but one of them. It is similar in
size and
shape to the Signal Corps T-24, which is also quite scarce.
