Hey Rick -
I love my SX-28A even though it's not the 'hottest' receiver
available. Looks great, tunes great, sounds the best. Can be a bear to
work on if you prefer the 'shotgun' approach for recapping, or even if
you take your time and do it right, a stage at a time.
The military as well as many Allied countries used this receiver in
WWII. There are a lot of them out there, perhaps more that were rack
mounted than in cabinets. If it was rack mounted and found intact or
unmolested, it should have a cover for it along the lines of the R-388
or such (SP-600 just had a wimpy sheet across the top). The table top
cabinets are nice though, complete with that Art Deco-looking trim
strip wrapping around the sides. Bottom plates are sometimes missing,
but Hank Arney had a bunch of these made up some time ago. I've
actually got a spare cabinet that I might part with at some point,
just found the trim strips for it a few months ago.
One thing to be careful of is the audio output circuitry. The audio
transformers have a tendency to zorch if/when components like caps get
too far out of spec. I'd suggest going through it well before using it
much. S-meter will also get dopy and lifeless for the same reasons.
Also, be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight. Those old yellow
dials will turn dark orange or brown in no time if left in the sun.
They crack easily too, don't ask me how I know this.
Take your time and go through it properly, it's a lot of work but well
worth the results. Hooked into a big speaker, they sound great -
especially if you can find a station playing Big Band music!
BTW, your BC-610 coil is still sitting on the table waiting to be
shipped. I got pretty well caught up on stuff this weekend that got
ahead of me while I was gone. I'll try to get it out to you this week,
shouldn't be a problem.
