I did it too, with RAK, RAL, and RBL receivers.  In the lf receivers, 
RAK and RBL, there is enough rf on the detector plate to drive the 
frequency counter, and it works very well.  In the RAL it worked fairly 
well up to about 8 Mc, but required the regeneration to be very advanced 
to get enough rf to drive the counter.  There is also plenty of rf on 
the detector grid, but you don't want to go there because it will 
introduce noise.
