I knew someone who did that and it most definitely works, although the 
detector has to be oscillating for it to work reliably. Thus it works great 
for CW and SSB, but not too well for AM.

Yes, SSB. RAL works great for SSB. RAK has too narrow an audio 
passband even for AM.
