Another request: does anyone have an RAL-* name tag or copy thereof? My
RAL-7 has no tag. I noticed that some hams in possession of surplus had some
sort of aversion to keeping the original mil tags on the equipment and they
removed them...
Thanks,
Happy New Year to all!

I notice the MARS call, and have the following to share. Back when surplus was coming out in tons through MARS, members here would get everything they had the means to haul off, and then swap the desirable stuff to non-MARS members for other (often commercial) items. Out here in the boonies of South Texas, MARS was typically the only reliable source of mil-surplus in the 50s and 60s. Of course, they *knew* the serial numbers of all those boxes were accurately recorded by the issuing office, so off came the nameplates before the trade. I heard stories like; "If it came to that, I would screw the nameplate on any old piece of junk if came around looking for it." What amused me is that anyone actually believed there were any useful records of serial numbers anywhere in the system. It sure cost us a lot of nameplates, though. I have a legally purchased R-388 which apparently suffered that fate at the hands of the Texas agency it was assigned to. Never found out if it lost the plate before or after State ownership.
