When my father was drafted in 1944,after basic he was sent to the
signal corps for training. He could not distinguish the difference
between a dit and a dah.So they put him in the artillery. He fought
under Gen. G.Patton in the "Battle of the Bulge" and when the war was
over he remained in Germany as occupation force until late in 1946.
This is the guy who taught me how to build flying model airplans, how
to wire up complex HO train layouts and encouraged me in my eraly
pursuit of radio knowledge and skill. He was behind me all the way when
I bailed out of college and took up electronics training at a technical
school.
I guess he would have made a lousy ham.

Yes, just like the revitalization we saw after the no-code Tech license
appeared, followed by the miraculous infusion of enthusiasm and talent
after 5
wpm General and Extra licenses appeared. Wait a moment...I guess none
of that
happened. Sorry.
When will our government bureaucrats learn that lowering standards
always,
without exception, harms any endeavor or activity? I was helping a
number of
no-code Tech hams who were working for their 13 wpm General when the
speed
requirement dropped to 5 wpm seven years ago. They all then
completely
abandoned ham radio...no challenge there anymore. I agree with their
sentiment,
and respect them for that.
Anyone truely interested in vintage radio technical details and
history, with
the extremely important role that Morse operation played within, can
only be
discouraged. Morse skill and interest in radio history are natural
partners.
