I have the same problem with a Learavian: bad pot with a two-pole 
switch for AC/Battery.  Temporary solution is just to use a single 
pole for AC only;  don't think I'm going to be finding 
a 1-meg vol. pot with 2-pole switch anytime soon.
A long-term solution would be a little "Borg Implant" 
SS switching board to switch the power, but since it's 
unlikely anyone (including the new owner after my estate sale)
is ever going to run it on batteries again, it's probably not
worth the trouble to build.
