Jay and Hue have provided an excellent perspective as usual, and the
idea of using a zener sounds like a good one for sets which (for
example) have a strong AVC action. The output voltage and load power
demand is roughly halved as well when using half input, so any concern
about overstressing the thermal envelope of the primary is a nebulous
one. From my severely limited experience, running a receiver dyno at
half voltage for an hour with original load will show it to be stone
cold, compared with full rated input and output which produces a frame
that is slightly warm to the touch.
