Here is some firsthand user information about AN/GRR-5 use in the Army.
......... I don't remember any vibrator noise when the receiver was
plugged in to 110 AC, but then there was always a certain ambient
background noise level that could've covered it up entirely. We used the
GRR-5 to listen to Armed Forces Radio, and Radio Moscow, for laughs, and
only rarely to listen to HF frequencies that we netted up on with
AN/GRC-9 transceivers. We had Angry 9's on the ground as well as jeep
mounted, along with some early VRC FM rigs............
