The problem of what happens to historically important objects or
records/data, etc. spans all interests. Really important stuff has been
discarded when someone died, either out of spite in some cases when the
survivor was always unhappy the guy spent more time with his things than
with (her) or for other reasons. A collector of aircraft had patterns
made for the Rolls Royce Merlin engine crankshaft, a pretty pricey
project, and the estate decided it would be a liability problem even to
give them away, so destroyed them!
We should be grateful that E-Bay has to a degree replaced the
dumpster. I have bought a couple of bottles off E-Bay that my great
grandfather sold his bourbon whiskey in, over 100 years ago; bottles
with his name on them. Without E-Bay I'd never have found them.
In fact I may lighten up my ARC-5 collection via E-Bay one of these
days.
