These things sound somewhat better if one removes the perforated metal blast 
shield (or whatever it is) mounted betrween the speaker cone and the front of 
the enclosure.   Always going to be communications quality though.

I replaced the guts of one of my LS-166 units with a conventional speaker 
which did improve the sound quality.   The LS-3s that went with the 312/342 
receivers sound a lot better too.
