John -
The official name of the "AN" system of electronic equipment type
designators is the Joint Electronic Type Designation System, or JETDS.
JETDS is covered exhaustively in MIL-STD-186E which can be found at
http://ed-thelen.org/MIL-STD-196E.pdf. That is the current, official DOD
prescribing standard. The various mildeps also have regs and manuals
that implement the mil-std. The mil-std tells you more than you probably
ever wanted to know about the subject, including the history of JETDS.
The situation vis-a-vis the old SigC system (SCR, RC, etc) is much more
obscure. Doing a Google search on "scr signal corps" brings up a
gazillion hits, none of which seem to be "official" as to its genesis,
history, etc.
And BTW, neither "AN/XYZ-99" nor "SCR-999" are to be considered as
"packing lists." They are SYSTEM designations that identify a specific
group of lower level components.
Always try Google when looking for info such as this; Google can be your
friend - if you use it!
