I wonder what survival radio was carried by USAF pilots in 'Nam 1968?
US News & World Report for March 6 2006, has an exerpt from book
"Bury Us Upside Down: The Misty Pilots and the Secret Battle for the
Ho Chi Minh Trail" by R Newman & D Shephard, Presidio, 2006.
Exerpt available at www.usnews.com/misty
in 8 pages. In March 1968, Brian Williams bailed out over North
Viet Nam from his burning F-100.
"The moment he hit the ground, Brian clawed at the survival radio
in his vest and quickly contacted an F-4 pilot. The pilot had heard the
emergency beeper that had automatically activated once they ejected.
...instead of waiting patiently, Brian picked up his survival kit and ran...
every movement seemed to create a crashing noise. The Brian discovered
he had left his radio on a stump, back where he first landed. He had
another, but realized he was on the verge of panicking."
1) What activated the survival radio - was this what transmitted, or
was it the survival sled or ejected seat? Was the survival radio
intended to be left on, in beacon mode? Or was the pilot to shut it
off, to conserve battery?
2) What model of survival radio?
3) Was it standard to carry two?
