The TBX units are all of impressive mechanical construction, and electrically a lot of functionality was gotten from the single tube 837 phone transmitter in the early TBX. But the receiver lacks an RF stage. Even the ersatz SCR-288 (BC-474), about the same size and weight as the TBX, seems like a more modern set than the TBX.
I have only the RT units of the TBX-2, -4a, and partially hacked -8. The SCR-288, SCR-284, and SCR-694 just seem like significantly better radios.
