I read one account, in a Pac NW newspaper, where a Japanese aviator said the 
planes' radios
were "sealed" or something like that so they couldn't break radio silence. 
Other accounts have
seemed to contradict this, however, and the Zero pilot who crash landed on 
Niaue (sp??)
certainly tried to use his radio to signal for rescue. ( That was really 
dumb: for one thing,
a low horizontal antenna and 5 watts out on 4 -6 MHz isn't going to raise 
anyone, and
number two, no one's going to risk a ship to rescue one pilot. )
