Mac, Mike, et al,

That the 417 was discontinued because it was a mercury oxide cell appears to 
be urban legend.  Period catalogs plus at least one on-line replacement guide 
say carbon-zinc.  One list member who responded to my cry for help said that 
the cells used in the stack in the 417 were only used on a couple of other 
batteries, and that they were discontinued because of low usage.  Which 
discontinued the batteries using them of course.
