Hi Breck
Something seems a bit amiss with what you wrote vs. that web page, etc.
The top photo shows what is typical of the R-1051 (plain-no letter),
R-1051B, through, possibly D. Don't recall if there was an E. All those
models had what is called the "six-pack" design. There were at least two
versions of the six-pack typec - the original R-1051(plain) vs. the 1051B
and later. The main difference -- resolution. The first model went down to
500 hz steps by means of the switch on the vernier. Starting with the B, it
went to 100 hz and those models of 1051's have the larger knob with the
appropriate stepping. Nominally, the six packs from the "plains" are not
interchangeable, though I've heard that it will work after a fashion - but
the vernier and additional stepping won't work if crossed.
The "flat-top" design started, I believe, with the F. If not, definitely
with the G and H, and I believe those are the same in that regard.
What that web page seems to show -- Top is of a plain or B with the original
six-pack design. The line drawing shows a top view of a "G" (or H) with the
top cover in place. The last image is a photo of a G or H with the top
cover removed exposing the plugin cards and the cover is in the background.
I don't see where it shows the difference between a G and an H anywhere on
that page -- is it elsewhere on the web site?
All that said, I have a B that showed up with the flat-top version and
works. Most all the modules (with exception of the plain's six pack) are
generally swappable -- upward and downward compatible -- across the 1051
alphabet soup. However, I'm told that, for peak performance, the R-1051's
should be aligned as a total assembly, using a variety of extender cards.
If you have trouble finding that card, you could try an older type six pack,
if available, but don't use a 500 hz (1051-plain) version. Actually, after
the B, there were some feature/front panel changes, and evolution of the
components used, but no substantial change in performance or specs. The
earlier models, in retrospect, now have the advantage of using mostly all
discrete components. The later ones introduced IC's that are more difficult
to find now.
These receivers are prone to some "dumb" problems which you should not
overlook before seeking parts. They use hybrid D-Sub connectors in the
bases of the modules and mainframe which incorporate tiny RF coax
connectors. Those or sometimes even the d-sub terminals, can sink or fall
into the mainframe socket causing disconnects. Put the receiver on its side
with the chassis pulled open and check the bottom of the chassis for any
signs of this. If you find any, you can often just individually push them
in to make contact. Also, the mainframe needs to be mechanically synch-ed
with some of the modules and there are index markers on the drive disks for
that purpose -- procedure is in the manual. Not sure if that affects
synth/translator functioning.
Cecil Acuff would be someone to contact for parts/support if he still has
anything. At one point he had set up to restore and service the R-1051's.
hope this helps
Barry
