To set the push buttons on the BC-603:
1. Turn the receiver ON and let it warm up. The TM recommends 15 minutes.
2. Release the receiver push buttons by partially pressing any one of them.
3. Press the PUSH TO TUNE button and, while holding it in, turn the TUNING
control toward the high frequency end of the tuning dial until the word LOCK
appears under the hair line.
4. Insert a screwdriver in the hole above the push buttons and turn the
locking screw to the left until it binds slightly and then turn it right one-half
turn.
(The normal procedure was to adjust any particular channel button to select
a frequency corresponding to a xtal controlled channel in the BC-604
transmitter. If you are operating the 603 alone you will have to provide an
alternative signal source if a precise frequency setting is required.)
5. Hold in the PUSH TO TUNE button on the receiver and turn the TUNING
control to zero beat on the desired frequency.
6. Continue to hold in the PUSH TO TUNE button and latch (push in until it
locks into position) the receiver push button you want to use to return to that
frequency.
7. Slowly ease up on the PUSH TO TUNE button while maintaining zero beat by
adjusting the TUNING control as required.
8. Press the latched push button against it's stop two or three times. If
zero beat (or close to it) is maintained, depress an adjacent push button
slightly and carefully ease the latched push button out. (The TM recommends using
two fingers for this operation.)
9. If off zero beat at this point, go back and try again. If OK, go back to
step 5 to set up another push button. When setting up multiple frequencies
the TM recommends starting with the lowest.
10. After the last push button has been set rotate the TUNING dial to the
LOCK position and tighten the locking screw.
The above derived from TM 11-600, March 25, 1943.
