[Milsurplus] Tuning the ART-13/BC-348

Just a short story about a stupid (ME) operator. When the BC-375 was
replaced by the ART-13, operators found that maximum output was not
achieved by looking at the meters. Normal procedure was to take your
pencil and draw arc off the ART-13 antenna terminal. Longer the arc,
greater the power. Being a ground radio operator, at one time I was on a
flight to Washington in an old C-47.
so I tuned up the ART-13 in the ham bands. Without thinking what I was
doing, I grabbed a mechanical pencil from my pocket and proceeded to draw
an arc. Boy did that smart. Thereafter only carried wooden pencils when
flying.
