The Forest Service was doing this portable radio thing before Dec 7 '41
with equipment in the 33 MHz range from 7 MHz range xtals. Double
in osc and PA. It's true they had superregen receivers but i do not
believe that would have been that bad a solution; if so, it still could
have been designed with a superhet receiver and IF in the 1.5 - 2 MHz
