Marty & Group,
Have just been working on a BC-223-A for Ft. MacArthur. Kinda neat little
rig. We have the TU-18-A (3000 - 4500 kc) and TU-17-A (2000 - 3000 kc) tuning
units and the latter was easily adjusted to give 160M coverage down to
1860kc. Solid 18 watts of carrier out and modulates fully with a little adjustment
to the speech amp bias. Also responds very well to the technique of fm
reduction by slight over neutralization of the PA (same as the BC-191/375).
My question is, just what was the operational experience with the SCR-245.
I know the *X versions were used (or at least slated for use) in scout and
command cars, medium and light tanks and the M2 Half Track. Tanks, of course
went to the SCR-508/528 FM sets and the more powerful SCR-506, and in other
vehicular and ground based appellations the more powerful BC-191 based systems
(SCR-188, -177B, etc.) became ubiquitous. The 245, in fact, would seem to
have fit in the same niche as the SCR-284, but was not as portable, of course.
So, what were they finally used for? The Green Books indicate the Army
bought a lot of them.
Thoughts?
