I have a list of TBX models with contract dates, but not handy now, but
my assumption is, built well into 1945, the -8, that is. I would wager money
the -8 was never used in combat. Of the 4-5 photos of the "TBX in action"
( mostly staged, not actually operational ) the photos ONLY show the
white-face meter model, that is, the non-radiumed, 837 transmitter model.
Remember when FAIR had these radio in trunks? Those were short pants
days for me and i was amazed you could buy a jungle-ready radio in an
appallingly heavy shipping trunk. I gotta confess, one major mistake i have
made in the past was to actually discard the trunk.
There a couple not frequently seen accessories for the -8. The plastic
rain visor for the front panel, and the adaptor for the EL-4 ( right nomenclature)
to drop the early TBX filament voltages down to the -8 level.
Most folk seem to value the -8 higher, but i prefer the early one. I like those
tubes more, the single 837 transmitter is unique, and the WOBBLER control
is nifty too.
Did someone really mention LO radiation from the TBX ??? What, pray tell,
were the Japanese using to DF these? And what would they do with the
information? They already knew where the enemy was! -Hue Miller
