TBX-8 was pretty pointless in such an
obsolete sow's ear system. ..."

I once had a TBX, and was mostly frustrated by those awful thumb-wheels for
tuning. Even with charts I was never sure where I was. That said, the 837
is a marvellous crystal oscillator. I wanted to use FT-243 crystals rather
than those big hockey-pucks installed, and was concerned about crystal
current. So, I installed a series 60 ma lamp, and with any crystal the lamp
was dark, meaning less than 40 ma of crystal current. This means you can
have a crystal oscillator with 500 volts on the plate, significant rf
output, probably 15-20 Watts, and absolute safety for the crystals. The 837
should drive a pair of 813's or a 4-250's with no trouble or sweat.
