The standard ELINT radio receiver system on fast attack submarines (SSNs) in
my era of submarining (30 years ago) was the AN/WLR-6. It consisted of a
console with plug-in receiver modules that could be configured for the needs
of the mission.
Most if not all of the SSNs carrying the AN/WLR-6 have been scrapped, and
once in a while some of the receiver modules show up at hamfests and
auctions. It would be neat, but bulky, to have a complete system as a relic
of the cold war. But I'm betting relatively few components of the AN/WLR-6
made it out of the nuclear vessel scrap yard at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard
intact.
On my ballistic missile boat (also long scrapped), we had some specialized
HF communications gear in addition to the standard R-1051/T-827 stuff, to
which I can find not even a single reference on the internet. I'm sure it
would be hopelessly obsolete stuff today, but I'd love to run across some of
it at a hamfest or auction. If you come across something with a
nomenclature beginning with "AN/BR..." you've likely got some submarine
radio gear.
