There is little question that LOs can be detected nearby, and there are plenty
of examples. The BBC's effort to collect radio and TV fees is but another
example.

The question was, does LO leakage present a real threat for the long range
detection of a ship or plane, and can it be DFed? IMO, the answer is likely no
for a number of reasons, and the persistence of this myth is likely the result
of a (very successful) disinformation campaign in WW II.

BTW, I suspect the BBC's 'detector vans' may have been largely  (but not
entirely) a similar operation. Kill a chicken to scare the monkeys. The IRS does
the same thing in the USA about a month before tax filing time.
