Mike,

 You can specify that the package not be left without a signature when you 
ship it. There are other options available.  If you do this and the package is 
left because the driver messed up, it is the responsibility of FedEx to assume 
any responsibility for damage or theft.  I have used FedEx for years and have 
never had a problem.

Having said that, it is up to the package receiver to let you know if there 
are any delivery problems before you ship.  If he /she doesn't, it becomes 
their problem.
