Here are some thoughts:  If you indeed move the IF, then you have pretty well said that you will never want to plug in another channel.  Unless you want to warp that crystal as this one is.  Now, I admit I haven't checked lately, but there were people still making FT-243 crystals as recently as year before last.  Or, get a new, correctly correlated HC-18 or HC-25 and put it inside the FT-243 case.  Or plug an HC-17 in directly if you don't mind the looks.

I have moved the IF of radios in similar situations, and almost invariably, ended up regretting it.

And worth every penny.
