You are assuming the radio stays in one place while you go in another
direction. Even the BC-1000 had the (optional ) configuration of headphones
+ lip microphone. Your headphones aren't going to rip out unless you 
snag them in underbrush.
German and Japanese walkies also freed the arms by employing throat mics
and headphones.
Japan apparently had a one-tube walkie styled like the BC-611, but it is
e x t r e m e l y rare if not the rarest of the rare.  My guess is their engineers
received a captured BC-611 - or maybe just saw a photo of one - and 
decided to try out the package formula.  Of course, theirs operated on
low-vhf. 
The BC-1000 was the distance winner among all these but that battery 
would bankrupt most armies. BTW one user told me the AFC feature
made for very easy tuning to counterpart. 
Actually, come to think of it, among carried radios, i think the WS18 
and German Torn FuG, being low HF radios, would give the best range,
maybe just by having the cw option. -Hue Miller
