One of the 1950s Radio News ( USA ) magazine had a short article on running
car radios (with vibrator supply) in the home on AC. With the standard CT
primary vibrator transformer, the author advised ignoring the CT and running
60 Hz AC to the opposite ends of the full primary ( switched dc) winding.
For a 6 volt vib, they recommended 10 vac, for the 12 volt vib, they recommended
20 vac. If this sounds scary, remember that the full primary switches effectively
2x the battery supply across the full transformer primary.
This was for a 5 or 6 tube radio drawing, i believe, about 5 A.
Note, i have not tried that, nor do i believe everything i see in print, but i would
try, and do plan to try this tecnique. -Hue Miller
