The least destructive and most efficient solution to your problem was suggested by John, build or buy a solid state replacement for the vibrator.
And, do check and replace if necessary the buffer capacitor.
To answer your specific questions about using 12 VAC into the transformer primary, consider the following: The transformer is designed to operate at a square wave frequency of about 115 Hz. So it will probably be a little short of iron for your 50 Hz. But, wait, maybe 100 Hz would work. Full wave rectify the 12 VAC, and capacitor couple it into the primary. I have seen that work, but do not know the long term reliability of that solution, nor the size of the huge coupling capacitor necessary.
