SOP 'way back when (I was RSO) was to take and record readings at 6".  From 
this, you could with moderate accuracy calculate dose rate and farther 
distances or calculate the 2 mr/hr radius.  Surface readings, although somewhat 
indicative of how hot the source is, tend to be inaccurate because the source to 
detector distance may be small compared to the physical extent of the source, 
detector, or both.  Especially with ionization chambers or early large diameter 
GM tubes.

I also agree that Mum's the word is the best tactic.  If you stick your head 
up, we may all get shot.

On MAW employment, 1st MARDIV carried them to the Chosen Reservoir and back 
according to an account I read last year.  Aircraft on call during the 
withdrawal included F4U's specifically mentioned.
