Are you sure they were really PRC-6s?  There are several solid state radios 
that look like a PRC-6 but are not, such as the French TR-PP-11 (including 
Italian and Portugese variants) and the Racal PRM-4160T.  There were also 
some solid state versions made in Germany by Telemit.
