Agreed, the lead acid 490s were a disaster. They can also be used in the
PRC-104 if you have the big battery box but they are heavy and even when good
have poor life.
To give an idea of modernizing that can be done, I took the small PRC-104
battery box and using NiMH cells fit 8.8 AH of capacity in there. Compare to
the pair of BB-490's which total 2.8 AH, and are twice the size and weight.
