It's probably a combination of fan, windage, and commutator noise, and is 
really bad.  The solution is to build a sound-muffling box around it, or use 
a solid-state inverter.  Wait a minute! I also have a 400 cycle solid-state 
inverter, and it sings too, but not as loud.  Also its cooling fan sounds 
like a tornado when it fires up.  Always problems...
