The ham had to monitor an AM station, but
didn't have to listen to it.  Many hams wired
a GE-47 pilot light bulb in series with the
speaker leads of the AM radio.  Then turn
the volume up so that the lamp lights or blinks.
If the bulb didn't light for a while, check if the
AM station was off the air.  If it was then
tune to a 640 or 1240 station.  Shut down
the ham transmitter.   That's all.
