The "bats" I bought are semi-rigid, unfaced, with one side more solid than 
the other.  They could be used for duct liner, but are not self-supporting. 
I think duct-board would have the same acoustical properties, but more 
expensive.  I couldn't find an HVAC supply house - maybe they're secret.

Also, upon further reflection, I do not think the inverter reactance is 
varying with input voltage, or the capacitors would have a different effect. 
I think it's a matter of excitation and carbon pile settings at the specific 
input voltage.
