As the mod (or damage if some prefer) has already been done, I don't have 
strong feelings about it one way or the other (except that if I had it I'd 
probably demod it).  But unless you have definite need for two phone jacks, you 
could sorta do both.  Plus being able to turn the AVC on and off is good, too.  
Off for alignment.  On or Off as needed otherwise.  You could reinstall the 
original three position switch, remove one of the phone jacks (mechanically, not 
electrically), tie it securely up inside (for a future owner) and install the 
RF gain pot in its place.  What you do about the ON/OFF switch is up to you 
(keep it as is or run it through the original switch.  There was a commercially 
produced AC supply by Hallicrafters that does the latter with minimal wiring 
changes).
