Yep.  Both the fabric and the plating on the band tend toward the same color. 
 If all I need to do is increase the contrast so I can ID something, I 
usually use an ordinary pencil eraser.  Not very effective for restoration, though 
(takes too many pencils).

$3.00 was a bit of money in '56.  I don't know when it went up to this but 
later in the decade, the Federal Minimum Wage was only $1.25/hour.
