73 magazine ( i think it was this likely suspect....) had an article on adding 
bandspread. The way it was done somehow tapped into the gearworks from
the top of the cabinet, so the bandspread dial, if i recall, was a disk right out
in the open, old timey style, on the top of the cabinet towards the front. I
vaguely recall actually seeing one of these in real time at a swapmeet, but i
didn't pursue it for some reason.  I somehow do not think that was   an
elegant solution to no-bandspread. With no bandspread, the tuning rate
is like some consumer home shortwave all-bands radio, and that's what
kept me from getting  one of these. -Hue Miller
