I grew up and lived a couple of miles from the USAFM untill last May when I
re located to SW Fla.
So far the only thing I really miss there is the museum and what is left of
old MECI stock.
Much of the fine details discussed here are really undocumented, unfounded or
in other words "who the hellknows"
One thing pretty well known is some of the hydraulic system and some
mechanical assys were sent to the OEM for enviornmental and exposure
evaluation . THe LBG when found had most of its desert tan cammo gone due to
sandblasting while most of the orig factory paint remained fairly intact.
The focus of most souvineer hunters is the inside of the plane so who knows
what really happened to the radio sets.
I have even heard of some of the scavanged parts wich were used in other
AC,soon followed by that AC being "DOOMED" .
I still have some connections to the USAFM,So I suppose I could get more
info if the interest is there.
BTW if annyone has any info on BUCKINGHAM Gunnery trainning field just east
of FT Myers,I'd like to hear from you.I live 2 Miles from the area and have
been trying to gather info. There is still some skeletel remains . About 1/2
of the E-W rwy is used for the fleet of the LEE County Mosquito C-47
Bombers. From what I can tell looks like they have 8-10 active GOONIES and
2-3 parts units.
Really neat to see /hear these active esp in the spring and summer spraying
the canals here eventhough it is 4 in the morning!
