My dealings with surplus were with electronic surplus - not that they didn't get some Milsuplus from time to time. The place was Javanco in Nashville, TN. Located on 12th Ave south at the time, they were two warehouse size buildings with racks and shelves of all sorts of surplus electronic parts, gadgets, you name it. Owned by Javan Keith and his sister(s), I first experienced it when his dad was still alive and running/owned the store. I only encountered his dad once in the early 80's. I went back after I moved from Murfreesboro, TN to Nashville in the late 80's and found the place had been totally changed to what a lot of people remember it as. They started getting more into computer stuff in the mid 90's - when I agreed to do various repair things there in exchange for 'stuff' - pieces parts/computer thingy's/etc. I remember rummaging around in the basement of the building or in the 'dungeon' - a part that wasn't open to just anyone - since it was damp from a leaky roof and had no electricity. But that is where the excess tubes were kept. About 1999 or 2000, they moved from 12th Avenue to 8th Avenue under Eddie Warners'. I still did work for them until I moved to Georgia in 2001. I found out that they closed their doors in late 2001 or early 2002 after having a store manager skip town with over $500,000 in inventory! This was not long after Javan Keith had died. By this time they had sold a lot of their surplus inventory and were dealing with nothing but computer stuff. It was sad....if you couldn't find it at Javanco, you didn't need it.

There was (is?) a state surplus place in Nashville, but I was never able to find it.
