John,

Someone else will probably jump in with an exception (that they can't prove
someone else didn't strip) but I'll stick my neck out and say that all AN/ARC-5
components were originally painted black wrinkle, as were all of the Navy
sets and the earlier SCR-274-N. The plain aluminum finish units are all
SCR-274-N.

You cannot use the SCR-274-N transmitter racks with the AN/ARC-5 transmitters
anyway (regardless of their color). Wrong connector. Nor can you use the
MD-7/ARC-5 modulator with the other two sets nor vice versa. So far as I can
recall, the RAV, RAT, ATA/ARA and SCR-274-N components will all interchange
regardless of color.
